When calling 911
Only use 911 to report imminent threats to life or property.
Stay on the line with the dispatcher until told that it is okay to disconnect. Do not hang up.
Dispatchers are simultaneously obtaining necessary information from the caller and dispatching emergency services.
Remember the 5 W's... Who, What, When, Where, Why.
Stay calm and speak clearly as to not cause delays in the call taking process.
Dial 911 from any phone
- To report life threatening emergencies
- To report a crime
- To report a fire
Only use Text to 911 when unable to speak or calling is unsafe
Text the numbers 911 in the "To" field of the text message
- In the message field include the location of the emergency and a brief summary of the emergency
- Be specific
- Do not use abbreviations or slang
- The dispatcher will respond with a series of questions
- Do not turn off your phone or delete messages until the dispatcher concludes the conversation
